1. What is the difference between a .TEL domain and any other top level domains?

TEL TLD allows storing and controlling all the contact information directly within the DNS with no need for a site building or hosting purchase involved. This feature makes it different from any other domains, where the DNS just allows correlating a name with an IP address.

2. Can some of the contact data be protected?

Your contact data on the .TEL domains can be protected by providing access to a certain set of persons, only. For more detailed information, please, refer to our .TEL Domain Use Manual at TEL hosting information management.

3. What limitations are imposed on the .TEL domains?

A .TEL domain name may consist of 3 to 36 characters (Latin alphabet letters, symbol "-" and digits) and should contain at least one Latin alphabet letter. The "-" symbol may not be put at the same time in positions 3 and 4.

4. Is IDN possible for .TEL (in a national language)?

Yes, you may.For registration, you need to log in to "Manage your account → Orders: Register domain" and then proceed to "IDN Registration".

5. The domain .TEL domain is free, when displayed in Whois. Why cannot I register it?

If the domain is displayed in Whois as a free one, it does not at all mean that it is available for registration. This domain can be reserved by the Registry. Whois shows the information about domain owners. If a domain is registered by the trademark holders (Sunrise) at the priority registration period, but has not yet been transferred to its applicant (for instance, any supplementary documents are forthcoming or a dispute settlement is underway), Whois will display it as a free one. Further on, some domains can be reserved under the Registry or ICANN regulations. Therefore, they, too, can be listed as unregistered by the Registry or ICANN and, typically, have a "free" status with Whois.

Please, refer for any such domain lists to the Registry website

The domain registration availability (Available / Not Available) can be checked up at the Registry's website's main page in the Check Availability field.

6. Do the search engines index a .TEL domain?

Google has already indexed dozens of thousands .TEL domains. The TEL. Telnic has no data available on any deviations of the situation from the normal.

The search engines will be required to find a .TEL domain site. Therefore, a .TEL domain to be sought is to be referenced to in some way, or else the holder should add its .TEL domain to the search engine all by itself.

7. Can a counter be installed? What is the way to become aware of the .TEL domain visit statistics?

The .TEL domains are intended for the contact information storage to be kept directly within the DNS. In this case the visual information presentation is not more than an application.

However, the proxy page visit statistics is provided at https://telstats.nic.tel

It should be emphasized that the .TEL customer applications are addressed directly to the DNS in bypass of a proxy page, and, as the DNS does the answer cashing, in practical terms, the domain use statistics cannot be realistically drawn up. Consequently, the proxy page statistics will be able to provide comparative, rather than absolute characteristics.

8. I have registered a domain and received a letter on its attachment to a TEL hosting account, but the page would not open. Why?
